On Saturday the 20th of May I’m heading into Melbourne for KidLitVic 2017. I am so excited! I attended the inaugural conference last year and pitched my novel All My Father’s Secrets (under the name Only Dead Fish Float). I also attended excellent panel discussions, made some new writing friends (it was like being back in the playground again) and had an amazing time.
This year I’m pitching the same novel (tweaked) to a different publisher and I have the opportunity to attend a workshop on presenting in schools. I’m also hoping to catch up with some of the friends I made last year and see how they’re getting on.
I’m also going to make some changes this year:
- Take a notebook, not a laptop. It’s easier to handle and, I find, more intuitive.
- Be prepared with some questions of my own for the pitch. I was a bit star struck last year but this year I want to ask questions like, ‘what are you looking for?’.
- Take my business cards. It’s easier than jotting down details on a scrap of paper.
Whatever happens, the conference is going to be a fantastic opportunity to get out and mix with other writers.
